Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that mental health is health, and support should be accessible, local, and immediate when people need it. In Austin, this work has included sponsoring HB 109 to expand inpatient mental health facilities and as joint author of HB 114 to strengthen coordination of veteran mental health programs through the Texas Veterans Commission. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to improving access to care and strengthening systems that support Texans across every stage of life. We’re sharing local resources available in our district for anyone who needs support or knows someone who does. That should not be controversial, but in Texas, too many politicians have drawn themselves districts where the only election that matters is the primary. That changes how people govern. It makes politicians more afraid of losing power than failing their constituents. I wrote about why competitive districts matter and why democracy works better when we have to earn your vote.

This month, we recognize the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform, and the spouses and families who stand beside them every day. 🇺🇸 That service comes with real costs, carried not just by those who serve, but by the people who support them at home. Military spouses take on constant change, uncertainty, and responsibility, often without recognition. Supporting military families means more than words. It means making sure they have stability and security here at home. That’s why I worked to pass the 2021 constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes for surviving spouses of fallen service members, so families aren’t burdened after unimaginable loss. We owe our military community care, respect, and a commitment that when they come home, they have the healthcare, housing, and resources they need to thrive.
