HD 70 Press

State Rep. Mihaela Plesa, the only Democrat in the Legislature who represents Collin County, said Democrats must do well in blue areas, while appealing to voters in the suburbs. “Republicans are most afraid of the changes that they're seeing in places like Collin County, in Denton County and in Tarrant County,” she said.

The Dallas Morning News covered the State of Plano Business, and I was glad to be part of the conversation. Plano’s success is built on partnerships, between businesses, schools, higher education, health care, local government, and community leaders who understand that growth requires planning. As I shared with DMN: “These issues are critical to the things that we’re working on in the legislative session. We want to make sure that we have really strong partnerships for workforce development, for our educational pipelines.” That is exactly right for this moment. As North Texas continues to grow, the Legislature has to stay focused on workforce development, educational pathways, infrastructure, water, transportation, and the institutions that help communities thrive. Thank you to the Plano Chamber for convening this discussion, and thank you to Children’s Medical Center for having me at your table.

Democracy works better when politicians have to earn your vote. In my latest Dallas Morning News op-ed, I wrote about why competitive elections matter, why gerrymandered maps weaken accountability, and why Texans deserve representatives who listen to the whole community, not just the safest corner of a district. HD 70 is one of the few truly competitive districts left in Texas, and I believe that makes me a better representative. Read the op-ed and join the conversation.

The House Public Health Committee is holding its interim hearing NOW, and implementation of my bill HB 37, Everly's Law, is on the agenda. Everly's Law began with a conversation on a doorstep in HD 70. A family shared the loss of their baby and the lack of support they experienced during one of the most difficult moments of their lives. That conversation became HB 37. Today, the committee is reviewing how the law is being implemented across Texas, and we're already seeing results. Everly's Law established the state's Perinatal Bereavement Care Initiative, requiring designated hospitals to provide bereavement support services for families facing pregnancy or infant loss and creating a hospital recognition program to encourage best practices in care. Regional trainings for healthcare providers have already taken place in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Lubbock, and Corpus Christi, helping ensure families across Texas receive compassionate, standardized care when they need it most. 4,000 people on a Monday night. That’s what showed up in Plano last night. One thing I shared from the stage is that HD 70, the district I represent today, used to be Ken Paxton’s seat. People spent years saying Collin County would never change. Then voters changed it. Last night felt like another one of those moments where you can feel something shifting. Whether you agreed with every speaker or not, it’s hard to look at a crowd of 4,000 Texans showing up on a Monday evening and not recognize that people are paying attention, getting involved, and ready to make their voices heard.
